The first LOTTO 6aus49 draw took place in Hamburg on 9 October 1955 – it has been Germany's best-known game of chance ever since. The current format with the Superzahl (0–9) dates from 4 May 2013. KENO followed in 2004 and Eurojackpot on 23 March 2012, a European lottery Germany co-founded.
In Germany the lottery is a matter for the states: each of the 16 states has its own public lottery company (WestLotto, Lotto Bayern, Lotto Hessen …). Together they form the Deutscher Lotto- und Totoblock, which runs rules, draws and prize payouts nationwide. The legal basis is the 2021 State Treaty on Gambling; the regulator is the GGL in Halle.
Lottery winnings are tax-free in Germany, whatever the amount; only income they later generate (interest) is taxed. Players must be at least 18.
No. Only income from the invested prize (interest, dividends) is taxed.
LOTTO 6aus49 on Wednesday and Saturday, Eurojackpot on Tuesday and Friday, KENO daily.
